June 7th: Day 18 : Miles Hiked : 30.9
Total Miles: 313.5
Today was a BIG mileage day but felt surprisingly normal. We started by 7 am with plans to see how far we could get by sunset. We started the day making quick and easy miles. We had gone 11 miles well before lunch. Knowing the Deep Creek area was going to be a camping challenge, we downed a Starbucks Via and turned on N’sync for inspiration. At one point while belting out lyrics from the early 2000s Dave said “I feel like they cut open my heart and pulled out this song”. 😂
We walked and laughed and sang and skipped our way down the trail. It was fun, just plain fun. The weather was mild and the canyon was beautiful. Steep canyon walls, winding rocky trail, and the creek. The creek that reminds you many have walked and lived within these walls. Canyons hold stories, history and the mystery of what we’ll never know they have seen. They are the secret keepers, the historians of their landscape.
We made it out of the canyon by the dam and crossed the creek before finding a campsite. Crossing the cold water was both startling and refreshing on my sore feet. After 30+ miles my feet were ready for a break. Dave found a site up a steep hill and I secretly cursed him in my mind. Ultimately, the spot was beautiful and perfect. He has a knack for finding great spots. We settled in and went to sleep to the sounds of a woman laughing. Maybe a woman, maybe a mountain lion, we’ll never know.
