Yes, it is 2019. You are not mistaken. The look of confusion as I entered the office to meet with a colleague about understanding some systems. “I’m Lema and we’ve been emailing, I’m one of the new PMs.”
“I thought you would be a man’. I’m not sure it was totally meant in jest, as IT, Digital, Project Management is very male dominated and my predecessor was a man.
Why on earth would they hire a woman?!
In one of my first jobs, as a Project Assistant on a high profile digital security project. I was taking actions in a meeting. I was very clearly told “I didn’t need to understand data striping” by one of the Senior Project Managers, who was man. It was fairly humiliating, in full steering group meeting of senior team members.
I had understood the concept perfectly.
I still remember this incident to this day, so clearly. I left Digital Banking pretty soon after that.
Ten years on attitudes to women feel like they have not moved on very much.
In August, I attended @shedoesdigital one of the questions raised was how to make Digital industries appealing to women. I do not have the answer.
Another week continuing to be visible and talking about women in Project Management and Digital Industries can hopefully help make some impact. #digitaltransformation #tech #digital #womeninprojectmanagement #projectmangement #careerchange #selfdevelopment #changemanagement #womenindigital #diversity #inclusion
