Before opening the PlayStation 2, remove all cables, controls, and memory cards. The lens laser can cause serious and permanent damage to the eyes if it is still connected to the power source. You should let the Play2 cool down for at least an hour after playing. Some components in the console are extremely hot and can cause severe burns.
- Step 1
Turn the Playstation over and remove the 4 soft and 4 hard squares so that the screws underneath are visible. One of these squares is covered by the warranty label. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws.
- step 2
Turn the Playstation back over and remove the top cover. Be careful with the tape that connects the two halves. This tape sends the power to the power switch. You will see a black cover over the lens. Use the small flat head screwdriver to remove this cover to reveal the lens.
- step 3
Moisten the swab with the alcohol and gently wipe it over the lens to remove dirt and oil. Be careful not to put too much pressure on the lens as this can cause damage. When the lens looks clean enough, use a dry cotton swab to wipe off any excess alcohol. Put the cover back on and reassemble the PlayStation 2. The PS2 Slim line with the flip cover is much easier and faster because you can access the lens without disassembling anything.
